Under state statute Chapter 24, Article 13 NMSA 1978, it is Doña Ana County's, responsibility to decently inter or cremate the body of any unclaimed decedent or indigent person.
Two years after death, Doña Ana County will provide a final disposition for unclaimed cremains through a memorial burial service. The public burials are held annually at a local cemetery where everyone is welcome to attend. This program does not assist with funeral expenses nor donations, viewing or any other service at the funeral home or place of worship.

To receive cremains, claimant must reimburse Doña Ana County the cost per cremation. Payment is only accepted in Money Order or Cashier’s Check payable to Doña County. Cash, personal check or credit card payments cannot be accepted.
